You speak about this scandal as if it is revenge. It is undoubtedly revenge by a certain sector of the British political world, but that does not mean the scandal has run its course or that the public punishment does not fit the crim. They’re right, it doesn’t. Murdoch’s punishment ought to be much worse. Also, there is no such thing as public revenge. The media doesn't work that way. Someone is seeking revenge. Someone is seeking to see how far the links stretch. It's an attempt to clear the air somewhat.
This scandal is no longer about the hacking or even bribery to gain information. Or even about the freedom of the press. It is about how far News Corp has penetrated those areas of government where it shouldn't be. If you, as some, classify the press as the fourth estate, then it ought to be separated from the normal three powers. In fact, it is becoming evident that News Corp's political power far exceeds that of a simple news agency, it is rather an actual political power, funding and supporting political parties. Its former editors and executives have penetrated the police, parliament and government, compromising the government’s independence. It is a web of spies from a foreign power, which seeks to dominate the political agenda in the country and subvert to its own use.
This is less of a hunt to see who did what wrong, and more to find the spies in our society, those who sympathise for whatever reasons (monetary or political) and those who allow this to occur. It is a separation of press and state, far more appropriate in the UK than anywhere else, where a large number of MPs are either former or current journalists, linked to News Corp. In fact nearly everyone has got their hands dirty. Everyone wants to be Murdoch’s friend, everyone wants to curry favour. His political support can make or break a party – the loss of The Sun’s support in 2008 seriously demoralised the Labour Party and one of the key reasons for its defeat in 2010.
May I remind you that both the head and essentially deputy of the Metropolitan Police have resigned (i.e. the two top policemen in the country). And it goes far further than mere responsibility for allowing minor bribery and loss of information. The accusations levelled are that they deliberately allowed the previous investigations to close without any significant results and that they hired staff who had conducted phone hacking as PR gurus. There are further accusations of nepotism and massive corruption.
The scandal has got so bad that the PM himself is tittering on the edge. The calls for his resignation are growing. More than 10 enquiries are going to be set up and a massive overhaul of the relationship between the press and politicians is in order. This is not a minor scandal, nor if all these accusations are true, then Murdoch is liable to a much lesser crime. The integrity of the government is compromised, and whatever the comparisons, it is not mere revenge, there is something going on.
